Adobe is sponsoring RAFT in partnership with the Krause Center for Innovation (KCI) to train educators to help youth find their voice and exhibit their potential. These classes (free for educators) will provide training in Adobe software and equip middle and high school educators with methods using Adobe Youth Voices project-based Create with Purpose strategy. All other educators also welcome.

Enrollment Policy
  • Priority enrollment is offered to middle and high school educators up to 3 weeks prior to class.

  • Any other educator can sign-up and will be placed on a waiting list until 3 weeks prior to the class and then enrolled, if space is available.

  • Non-educators may also sign-up on a space available basis and if enrolled, will be billed Foothill application ($30 once per quarter) and tuition fees ($17 per unit).

Registration and Foothill College credit
Registration for all Adobe Youth Voices Teacher Training classes is done through the RAFT website or by calling RAFT at (408) 451-1421. All participants are also required to complete the Foothill College Online Application to formally register for the class. Every 6 hours will earn the participant a 1/2 unit of Foothill College credit. At the end of the quarter, a transcript can be requested from Foothill College. This transcript will show the units earned and the classes attended.

The cost of these units for educators is paid for by Adobe, non-educators will be billed Foothill application ($30 once per quarter) and tuition fees ($17 per unit).

Adobe Photoshop 1: Experience the fun of true creative expression with Photoshop as your digital dark room. In this quick overview course, learn basics and easy edits through fun hands-on print projects. Adjust colors and contrast, work with selections and layers, use touch-up tools, crop, resize, and save for web and print. These simple techniques provide a foundation for digital imaging.
INSTRUCTOR: Janet Davis has been an elementary school teacher for 14 years. She also worked as a web developer for NASA Ames and was an Instructional Designer for Foothill/DeAnza Learning Technologies Division. She was interim staff and technology trainer at De Anza College and taught computer graphics and animation at both Foothill and DeAnza Colleges. She is an Adobe Education Leader and has worked part-time for Adobe travelling and presenting Adobe products at educational trade shows. Currently she is Program Manager for the Adobe Train the Teacher program.

In this hands-on course, learn to arrange text, illustrations, and photos for brochures, newsletters, flyers, and books with a professional touch. Adobe Premiere Pro (2 days: Saturday, November 6 & Saturday November 13) : Create compelling videos and documentaries! In this hands-on overview course, learn production and Edit basics. Plan and create storyboards, capture and import video, edit clips, add transitions, audio, titles and credits, and export for DVD and the web. Learn about a variety of free or low cost video editing tools. Digital storytelling provides a platform for imagination, writing, and composing at any age level across the curriculum.

This is a two part class - participants are required to attend both days.

INSTRUCTOR: William Cavada has received his B.A in Art Education with an emphasis in Conceptual Design and Art History from San Francisco State University and a Master Degree in Instructional Technology from San Jose State University. He has been an educator for the past eight years. He is currently a tenured art teacher at Mt. Pleasant High School, in the East Side Union High School District. He has implemented and created new and innovative ideas into the art department, which have included an introductory course to art, an animation courses and a multimedia/graphics course. In each course, technology integration has been a key component for delivering and accessing content. Currently, he is co advisor for the school's Cardinal Quill, an award wining literary magazine as well as the schools advisor for the yearbook. He has been in graphic design for over 20 years and is skilled in a variety of technical systems and software. He has a working knowledge of both the Windows and Mac systems. He is proficient in a variety of desktop applications which include, InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Freehand, Director, Fontographer, Dreamweaver, and Flash. He has also developed multimedia instructional material using interactive programs and web based learning curriculum.

Adobe Flash 1: Amazing animations and dazzling designs! Present multimedia with flare! Jazz-up presentations and web sites with interactive animations of illustrations, photos, and type. In this hands-on overview course, learn the drawing tools, work with a timeline, and animation basics. With Flash, type and images dance.

Adobe Flash 2 and Flash 3 (2 Days: Saturday December 4 & Saturday December 11): **This is a two part class - participants are required to attend both days.**
Day 1:
Have fun with digital animation! Continue to learn to create illustrations, photos, and type that move and dance. Work with layers, symbols, and movie clips. Create short stories that encourage students to find their voice!

Day 2:
Create amazing interactive animations! Present multimedia with flare! Work with layers, symbols, and movie clips. Learn simple ActionScript to create navigation buttons and animation portfolios. At the end of this class you will have created a complete Flash project with working links.

Adobe Illustrator: No more Crayolas! Discover the magic of digital drawing and painting. Your computer screen is your canvas. Paint and draw with shape and pen tools and add type to create a logo, illustration or layout. Draw objects, work with brushes and color blends. If you want to draw a logo, make a sign, or illustrate a concept, Illustrator provides clean lines and efficient graphics for print and web.

Create Great Books: InDesign: If you are wondering how to format and assemble a book for self publishing then this is the workshop you are looking for. In this workshop we will cover how to create a master template so all of your chapters look the same. How to use InDesign book function to assemble your book keeping the page numbers consistent from chapter to chapter. How to create the table of contents and index with ease. An lastly how to upload your book on to the internet so it can be published as a print on demand hard copy or downloaded as an ebook.

Fees are listed after each class description, all materials included. Non-members who meet our membership guidelines can participate for a slightly higher fee. Classes fill up fast, so participants are encouraged to register and pay in advance, or provide a deposit. Fees are nontransferable, and refunds are only granted if you cancel at least one week prior to class. All refunds are paid in RAFT dollars. If you fail to attend class or cancel after the one-week deadline, you will not be given a refund. Deposits are returned when the class is completed, or if you cancel one or more weeks in advance.
