ALearn’s mission is to raise significantly the college-going rates for low income, first-generation students in Silicon Valley by increasing their readiness and eligibility for college through high quality supplemental programs.
What We Do
ALearn provides academic programs and community support programs to do the following:
- Encourage all students to expect a college degree by setting high academic standards and motivating students to enjoy learning
- Extend the in-school learning day with complementary after-school and summer programs
- Create additional support by reaching out to parents and involving them in the success of their children
- Reach out to businesses and community organizations to provide holistic, comprehensive support programs
- Provide positive role models for the participating students by hiring college student teacher assistants.

What We Do
We create tools and experiences that help you to become an active explorer: hundreds of explore-for-yourself exhibits; a Web site with over 25,000 pages of content; film screenings; workshops for lifelong learners including day camps for kids and family investigations; evening art and science events for adults—plus much more. We also create professional development programs for educators, and are at the forefront of changing the way science is taught. We share our exhibits and expertise with museums worldwide. |

We welcome our students with a methodology for innovation that combines creative and analytical approaches, and requires collaboration across disciplines. This process—which has been called design thinking—draws on methods from engineering and design, and combines them with ideas from the arts, tools from the social sciences, and insights from the business world. Our students learn this process together, and then personalize it, internalize it, and apply it to their own challenges.
What We Do
At the d.school, we learn by doing. We don’t just ask our students to solve a problem, we ask them to define what the problem is. Students start in the field, where they develop empathy for people they design for, uncovering real human needs they want to address. They then iterate to develop an unexpected range of possible solutions, and create rough prototypes to take back out into the field and test with real people. Our bias is toward action, followed by reflection on personal discoveries about process. Experience is measured by iteration: students run through as many cycles as they possibly can on any project. Each cycle brings stronger insights and more unexpected solutions. |

The Santa Clara County Office of Education (SCCOE) is a regional service agency that provides instructional and business services to the 31 school districts of Santa Clara County.
What We Do
The SCCOE serves students through special schools, alternative schools, Head Start and State Preschool programs, migrant education, and Regional Occupational Programs. The Office also provides curriculum support, staff development, and technology training programs directly to teachers and staff in schools countywide. |

Schmahl Science Workshops (SSW) is a non-profit partnership of students, parents, teachers, scientists, and engineers who have come together to foster the innate curiosity and love of science that exists among children.
What We Do
We offer over 600 pre-K through 12th grade workshops in all fields of science. Our programs include camps; in-school, after school and home school workshops; and advanced student research.We also provide workshops for the California Science Standards and the California Standardized Testing and Reporting (STAR) tests. Many of our workshops are provided to schools that do not have the resources to include science as a regular part of their instructional program. |

The SERC is a unique educational resource center that houses over 5000 science resources in the thematic areas of Earth Science, Physical Science, and Life Science. We strive to facilitate the delivery of high quality, inquiry-based preK-12 grade instruction and to supplement and enrich the science curriculum in the classrooms and out community. Our users include in-service & pre-service teachers, SJSU students, staff, faculty, Girl & Boy Scouts, and a local nature center. Our patrons can check out science equipment, biofacts, books, DVDs, and videos. They can also become certified in our Wildlife Ambassador program and be allowed to bring animals such as a tarantula, snake or tortoise into their classroom.
